Crews called to deal with blaze at brewery maltings
FIREFIGHTERS were called to tackle a blaze at a Burton brewery.
Fire and rescue teams went to Molson Coors’ Shobnall Maltings, in Wellington Road, at 8.30am yesterday in response to reports of a fire in a building.
It is thought the fire started when a graining machine overheated, causing it to ignite.
Molson Coors described the incident as ‘nothing serious’ and said that no-one was injured in the blaze.
A spokesman for the brewing giant said that it was‘business as usual’ at the site, despite the incident.
“The small fire was contained within the building and it was brought under control very quickly,” she said.
“Two Molson Coors employees spotted it and they dealt with it straight away.
“It is business as usual for us and no production has been affected.” Despite passing the fire off as a minor incident, three fire crews from Burton and Tutbury were called out to the brewery.
They used breathing apparatus, one hose-reel jet and an aerial ladder to tackle the flames.
Media officer for Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, Sarah Collis, said: “The firefighters responded to an automatic fire alarm.
“On arrival, smoke was visible from the machine so a couple of firefighters went in.
“There weren’t actually visible flames, it was just quite smoky, so it took a while for them to check it all over “That was the reason we had so many personnel attending, because we had to ensure it was safe.
“It was a case of checking various ducts around the site as well.”
Area commander for East Staffordshire, Brian Griffiths said: “These sorts of jobs are always like this — often it takes a lot of firefighters just to make sure that everything is safe.”
Assistant area commander Pete Jones added: “The fire was caused by to a build up of dust on a motor that was used to operate the machinery at the maltings tower. The motor overheated causing the dust to ignite.”

This is a good connector for a DC system. Not a complicated piece, but a very good one. The ends were all 4″ , the hose fit snuggly and the wire clamps held.
When making a branch in the DC system, to go to several different pieces of equipment, the “Y” connection is better to use than the “T”. The Y will allow for a better air flow. Combine the Y with a/several blast gates, then it’s almost like having a single hose go to each piece of equipment.
When installing a dust collection system, eliminating resistance to airflow is what it is all about. The ideal is as large a pipe as possible, flowing in a straight line, without any ridges in the surface. Of course in the real world at least some of these things wind up being less than ideal. What this Jet 4″ Y-connector does, is give you a large pipe, that makes a gradual Y as opposed to a straight 90 degree angle T, and the sides of the connector are smooth. So when you need to divide your air source into two lines, this elbow does the nicest job.
