British brands are back in fashion.
We all remember the days of Cool Britannia. It was the 1990s, bands like Oasis and Blur ruled the pop charts, McQueen and Galliano dominated the catwalks, and London was swinging.
In my mind, 'Cool Britannia' was about a Britain which led the way, not in terms of industrial might or manufacturing firepower, but in terms of style, fashion and design.
Today seems a world away from those heady days of the 90s. Instead of booming, the UK is mired in the worst economic slowdown for a generation. Remember the surge of optimism we felt when that nice Mr Blair crossed the threshold at 10 Downing Street? Now, instead, we have nice Mr Cameron, but that optimism is a thing of the past.
Times are hard, and Britain is in a struggle to survive in a world increasingly dominated by the twin giants of China and India.
And yet, more than a decade on from those heady days, we are seeing a range of British businesses which show that British style is, once again, cool.
Innovation through designJust look at Burberry ( LSE: BRBY ). This iconic brand is the epitome of British style. And it is hugely successful, being valued at £6.5bn. Customers around the world, and particular in the Far East, just can't get enough of this luxury brand.
What is Burberry about? Well, it has taken a simple brand, which at its heart is no more than a font and a tasteful tartan motif, and it has built this up into something iconic, memorable and exuding luxury. How? Through world class design .
As investors we often talk about 'moats' -- the most successful companies are those with big moats that protect their business from competitors. Burberry's moat is its brand. Well, not just the brand, but the world class design team that has been built around it.
In a world where mainstream fashion is dominated by low-cost manufacturers based in emerging markets, UK clothing companies need to protect themselves from this assault by focussing on design and building a brand.
Low-cost manufacturers can replicate many things, but they can't replicate creativity.
