Arcade Fire lights up the night for fans

Arcade Fire has already been honoured plenty for laying out the blueprint for the indie pop sound of the past decade, but on Thursday night it got the best award an act can hope for, in the form of an adoring crowd caught up in the spell of its grand orchestrations on the Dartmouth waterfront.
Seven or eight thousand people at Alderney Landing might pale in comparison to the crowds at California’s Coachella Festival or the throng awaiting the Montreal band at the U2 show in Moncton on Saturday night, but the eight-piece outfit brought its A-game anyway, with an outpouring of ecstatic musical vignettes.
Led by the singer-songwriter couple of Win Butler and Regine Chassagne, Arcade Fire began by burning spots into our retinas with the flashing lights that accompanied Ready to Start, an apt salvo from the band’s Grammy-winning album The Suburbs, powered by dual drums from Chassagne and Jeremy Gara and the double violins of Sarah Neufeld and Marika Shaw.
"Let’s all have a really good time," Butler exhorted. "We’re really happy to be here tonight, so I give you permission to dance and let everything out."
Presumably the same applied to his fellow band members, as Butler’s brother Will gyrated wildly behind a bank of keyboards for Keep the Car Running, from the sophomore release Neon Bible. As Chassagne waltzed with her hurdy-gurdy, the audience breathed in the song’s exhaust and clapped in unison while adding to its oh-uh-oh chorus.
Neighbourhood #2 (Laika) from the 2004 debut Funeral completed the trifecta, with Will Butler and keyboardist Richard Reed Parry stealing focus by racing each other on a pair of floor toms while the female voices uttered the song’s eerie childlike chant.
It was yet another example of how Arcade Fire are masters of arrangement, helped additionally by violinist Owen Pallett, who joined the band for the latter half of the set, and on The Suburbs by former Halifax musician Tyler Messick, who got a shout-out from Win Butler.
Butler also apologized for the lengthy gap between visits to this area.
"Was anyone here when we played the Marquee Club?" he asked, to a handful of distant cheers. "I think that was our first proper show before Funeral came out.
"Memories, misty watercoloured memories . . ."
A vigorous "Halifax, let’s go!" was added to the chorus of Neon Bible’s No Cars Go, which built in drive like an adolescent rolling down a grassy hill, while Chassagne spun like a Christmas ornament in her sparkly dress, reflecting the flashing white and orange lights.
