Coastal Archers hold 25th summer tournament

COASTAL Archers – based at Berrow and Mark - held their 25th Summer Tournament with a one way Double Clout shoot.

Competitors came from as far as Pembroke for the clout shooting in which archers try to drop their arrows as close as they can to a small flag, called the clout, on the field.

The men's flag is 180 yards away and the ladies’ is 140 yards away.

The juniors shoot shorter distances with the youngest children shooting at a clout 80 yards away.

Dorothy Rockett of the Archers said: “The very strong wind made accurate shooting very difficult at such long distances, particularly for the longbow archers who shoot traditional wooden arrows with feather fletchings.

“Their arrows fly much more slowly than the aluminium and carbon arrows that the recurve and compound bows tend to shoot.”

Ladies Longbow: 1 Mavis Reynolds (Cheltenham Archers), 2 Janet Hudson (Deer Park Archers), 3 Paula Heath (Bowmen of Mendip). Ladies Barebow: 1 Janet Ross (Wellington Bowmen), 2 Val Leveridge (Coastal Archers).
