Teachers take jobs during the summer to keep busy and earn extra income

During the summer, Kelly A. Randall is scooping ice cream and Jeffery C. Robbins is driving a hay wagon at Old McDonald’s Farm. But come September, they’ll both be back in front of a classroom.

Whether it’s a cure for summer boredom, a way to keep a schedule or a way to earn some extra income, many north country teachers work part-time during the summer, these teachers say.

“I think most teachers do it — most of the people I work with and my friends from other districts do,” said Mr. Robbins, a fourth-grade teacher at Sackets Harbor Central School. “It’s hard to go two and a half months without any income, and some people do it out of boredom.”

Mr. Robbins’s parents own Old McDonald’s Farm in Sackets Harbor, and he has worked at the farm on and off for years. Now, he drives the hay wagon and works with children who visit the farm.

“I grew up helping my father, but the last couple summers, the farming technology has changed so much, so it’s been more helping my mom out,” he said. “It’s talking to kids, which goes hand in hand with teaching. The extra cash is nice, it’s an interactive job and it helps out my family.”

Taking another job during the summer also lets teachers do a job that is less stressful than teaching. Miss Randall just finished her first year of teaching algebra and geometry at Carthage High School, but she’s in her eighth summer of working at Trolley Ice Cream in Henderson. It started as a summer job when she was in high school, and now she is working there during the summer when she teaches high school.

“It’s something to do — I still want to have a schedule and not be bored,” she said. “And it’s a way to make a little extra money, since we don’t get paid during the summer for teaching.”

The Trolley is open from May to Labor Day weekend, and Miss Randall manages it. When school was still in session, she was calling in ice cream orders during her free period, she said.

“It’s a different kind of stress, because I manage this place,” she said. “It seems like a lot of younger teachers do it. If I had kids, I’m sure deciding to work in the summer would be different.”

Steven A. Baytos has been teaching at Sackets Harbor for 13 years, and he and his brother have co-owned Savory Cafe, 1511 Washington St., for eight years. He recently opened Savory Downtown, a restaurant at the Best Western Carriage House Inn, 300 Washington St.
