Sometime around 1948, when I was 10 years old, I discovered a baseball board game called "All-Star Baseball." It had been invented by the Yale baseball coach, Ethan Allen, a former big league outfielder for the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants.

I loved the game and immediately became a zealous player. I vividly remember long summer afternoons when friends and I spent hours hunched over the board, spinning the pointer that is at the heart of the game.

We picked teams and kept elaborate statistics. The game was a fascinating mixture of real baseball players, their historical performance and a game of luck. It was, therefore, much like the real game. So imagine my surprise the other day when I saw a prominent article in The Wall Street Journal describing the current popularity of All-Star Baseball among a set of older players find in the game the same kinds of joy we did more than 50 years ago. The article was like finding a long-forgotten friend.

Allen was an intelligent man who took his baseball seriously, and the game he devised is such a success because it is based on baseball reality. The game begins with each contestant selecting his team from among a universe of choices comprised of several hundred former big league players, from Babe Ruth to Willie Mays to Rogers Hornsby.

Here the game resembles the wildly popular fantasy baseball. But in Allen's game each of the former players has his name on a small round card with the center cut out to accommodate the spinner, over which the card is placed each time that player comes to bat.

In a circle around the card is a set of numbers, each one in a small box with "1" at the top. To begin the game, the contestant makes out his lineup and selects the card for his leadoff hitter. Then the player puts the card over the spinner and spins. If the pointer falls on the number 1, it is a home run. If the pointer falls on box 2, that is a fly out, etc. I recall 10 is a strike out.

Allen's genius was to size each box size by reference to the actual historical success of the big league player. The home run box for Babe Ruth was the largest for any player, while tiny for a light home run hitter like Phil Rizzuto. I remember realizing what a great hitter Rogers Hornsby was by carefully examining the large size of his singles and doubles boxes. Hornsby was always my first pick.

One summer, my friend Roger Dionne and I played it incessantly. When vacation ended, we separated and I never saw him again. But at that age we competed daily at All-Star Baseball and he was a worthy adversary. Even though he was several years older, Roger knew his baseball and he was as willing to spend the day playing as I was. I have only the warmest thoughts of him.
