From Sesame Street to SpongeBob?

It’s Saturday. Your little angel has successfully finished another week of math and robotics camp, and even though he is only nine, you’re fondling brochures for Harvard and MIT. You imagine him a corporate leader, a respected university professor, an influential lawyer or – dare you dream it -- the President of the United States. Then from the living room, you hear it. The worst sound any educated, ambitious parent can hear— the theme from SpongeBob Square Pants.

Suddenly in your eyes, your little man isn’t living in the White House; he’s the guy cleaning it. You rush to turn off the TV before SpongeBob can suck fifteen points off your kid’s IQ.  It can be upsetting for parents. After all, your sweetheart used to love Sesame Street, Dinosaur Junction and Arthur – all shows with good educational or emotional lessons. Why does your kid suddenly like garbage?

Luckily, programs such as SpongeBob, Tuff Puppy, Phineas and Ferb and the Amazing World of Gumball aren’t indicators that your son will end up working at 7 Eleven. They just show that your little boy is becoming a little man.

Unlike preschool programs, shows for older kids are designed as pure entertainment. Research indicates boys ages six to eleven favor over-the-top animation and absurdist humor. This may be why SpongeBob and Phineas make parents crazy. How can a sponge wear pants? Why is Gumball a cat, but his best friend is a fish named Darwin? How can two nine year old boys invent a time machine, travel to the age of the dinosaurs, accidentally bring a T-Rex back to the present and not get caught

So what should parents do about SpongeBob and his ilk? Nothing. Unless you are willing to ban all TV, there’s no real harm in letting kids watch programs they enjoy.  According to PBS executive Linda Simensky, boys viewing habits take a sharp turn after age six. Story lines that appeal to girls such as friendship or romance make boys run in the opposite direction. They gravitate toward programs with male leads that feature problem solving and lots of action.

Most programs for the six to eleven crowd tend to have little violence or, like Star Wars: The Clone Wars, have cartoonish violence directed against non-humans and machines. This is good news, as programs aimed at your little ones are an advertiser’s dream. According to a 2010 study by Horizon Media, 55 percent of kids ages six to eleven have a TV in their rooms, and last year advertisers spent $121 million trying to reach them through cable and network programs.

From Sesame Street to SpongeBob?

Turn on Ugly Americans or South Park some time if you don't believe me. Finally, don't let SpongeBob's super annoying voice and slavish idiocy drive you to throw the TV out the window. Someday, your kids will outgrow him. And if not, I hear even the

The Jesus Follies « Older Eyes

.  My daughter converted to Mormonism, married a Mormon and is raising her children LDS.  I was less than thrilled when I found out, hated that I couldn’t attend their wedding (they were sealed in the temple) and don’t love the the idea that when I’m in my eighties, my grandsons are going to disappear on a mission for two years.  But I love them all.  The Book of Mormon

I may not be religious but I’ve worked hard to develop a faith that works for me.  That faith is private, personal, precious and sacred.  When the guys at my Thursday Night Mens’ Group sit around kidding about each others beliefs, the laughter reflects the shared experience of men on a spiritual path.  There’s no shared experience with guys like Parker and Stone.  They think religion and spirituality are intellectually beneath them and that we’re stupid for believing … they just can’t say that publicly.  If you don’t think so, track down the Super Best Friends but bullies never take on the Big Guys.  Besides, if they did that, they wouldn’t make piles of money.  I don’t like guys like Parker and Stone so like Michael Otterson, I won’t be spending $200 to support them.

Here’s a second take.   I have three Mormon grandkids who go to a grammar school where there have already been instances of anti-Mormon behavior.  You know … I can’t be your friend any more because you’re Mormon are urbane New Yorkers who take it as a good-natured satire, no harm done.  There may even be Mormons who can get past the vulgarity and parodies of their beliefs to see its sweeter side.   But some people are going to walk out of that theater thinking it’s OK to make fun of Mormons … with Parker and Stone giving them additional ammunition to do so.   I can’t support that either.

That’s my story and I”m sticking to it.

It’s not even Sunday and you’re writing about religion! I think the concept of “The Book of Mormon” is interesting because it forces us to confront something with which we may be uncomfortable. As a Catholic, I may have an inherently different approach; I remember how unhappy my mother was about “Jesus Christ Superstar.” For some people, “Nunsense” may have been offensive. There’s a long list of art that mocks Catholicism. And frankly, if I were to view it through nothing but a religious lens, I would be offended by them, too. There are some whose system of belief (regardless of which following they belong to) will not allow for any making light of religion. There are others for whom it may be eye-opening and beneficial.
