Woodward Dream Cruise to serve as Chevy's 100-year birthday bash
Chevrolet on Wednesday kicked off the 100-day countdown to the brand's centennial birth date and intends to make a big splash next month at the Woodward Dream Cruise.
But General Motors' corporate leaders have decided that the brand's actual birthday, on Nov. 3, will come and go more quietly.
Plans for that day are still in flux, but they won't approach the 250,000-person party Ford held for its company and brand's 100th birthday in 2003 or the daylong celebration GM had in 2008, when the company turned 100.
Don't expect to see many 100th-anniversary ads either.
"It's a momentous milestone, but just letting people know that we've been around for a hundred years -- they kind of already know that," U.S. marketing chief Chris Perry told the Free Press. "Our awareness is 100%. It's the consideration and the opinion that's the problem."
Chevy enthusiasts round up classic rides at GM's Tech Center for 22nd employee auto showDarrel Dinger's first car was a 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air, which is why he bought the exact same one 10 years ago.
This beautifully styled memento of the 75-year-old Rochester resident's youth was among the 850-plus cars on display Wednesday on the lawn of the General Motors Technical Center in Warren, as part of the 22nd-annual employee car show.
The event kicked off GM's 100-day countdown to Chevrolet's 100th birthday on Nov. 3, though the row after row of cars included not just Chevys -- or even just GM cars and trucks -- but classic cars, hot rods, performance racers and contemporary vehicles from a variety of domestic and foreign automakers.
"Chevy is the greatest brand in the world," said Dinger, a GM retiree and first-time show participant, getting into the centennial spirit. "It's America's car. It's quality."
At the four-hour car extravaganza, including a 1914 Chevy Royal Mail and a 1934 Cadillac limo, GM executives selected 20 Chevys to showcase during the Woodward Dream Cruise. Chevrolet is sponsoring the Aug. 20 event, but festivities also include pre-Cruise fun, such as a Chevy parade on Aug. 18.
Ed Welburn, GM's vice president of global design, helped pick the participants and was looking for cars "with that emotion connection ... some Chevys that are very important."
Among those he was eying were a red Nova, a 1956 Nomad and an iconic buxom-bodied mid-century pickup.
"The big thing is we're looking for people who are ambassadors for the brand," said GM spokesman Tom Wilkinson.
