Average Josephine: Proper shoe fitting is in the past

Dear Average Josephine:

I was wondering if there is a conspiracy out there for those of us who wear half sizes in shoes — I don’t wear a 6 and I don’t wear a 7 — I wear a 6 1/2. I know there are a few brands that still make them — but they are getting fewer and fewer. Why, why, why is this happening? I figured it might be a MAN made decision at the factories. Can you check this out?

Let’s just say that shoe shopping is not what it once was. Back in the day, Average Josephine’s father-in-law was a shoe salesman. He worked at Bakers in downtown Detroit and he helped women find stylish shoes that also fit them well. This was at a time when even regular people — not just the wealthy — were treated to a proper shoe fitting.

However, those days are pretty much gone for most of us. Today, if we are lucky, a store employee goes to the back and pulls the size we tell them we need. Most of the time, we rifle through stacks of boxes and hope they have our size.

Average Josephine does have a few ideas. First, you need to know what brands still carry your size. Hush Puppies, Naturalizer, and Easy Spirit all still carry size 6.5. Then you need to find a place that sells those brands. Average Josephine suggests Macy’s, because they usually have a well-stocked shoe department.

In the past, Average Josephine has received criticism for telling people to consider the Internet for shopping. The big complaint is usually shipping costs. However, a lot of sites, like Zappos.com, now have free shipping and free return shipping. And if your main issue is just the right size (rather than having an irregular foot), then knowing you are a 6.5 in a given brand will mean that you probably will be happy with what you get.

In terms of a shoe-size conspiracy, Average Josephine is not sure. However, the image of an evil cobbler deciding to cause mayhem on half-size shoe wearers does offer some intrigue. It’s more likely that someone did a cost versus revenue analysis and found they could produce the shoes cheaper if they only did whole sizes.
