CUPCAKE WARS: South Walton Style (PHOTOS)

The Food Channel's Cupcake Wars and TLC's DC Cupcakes have nothing on South Walton. We have our own cupcake combat, and in this competition all who taste are winners.

As the new trend in sweets, cupcakes are now popping up in homes and businesses up and down 30A. Some tend toward the extravagant while others are simple, sweet creations.

Heavenly

The creator of sweets that has been churning them out the longest is Heavenly Dawson, who opened Heavenly's Shortcakes in Seaside in 1998. For a dozen years she has specialized in gelato and strawberry shortcakes concocted from her grandmother's recipe. She just introduced cupcakes to her offerings this year.

"I've tried them off and on and when the cupcake maker in Seaside closed last year, we decided to sell them. I have always loved cupcakes and decided we could make that happen," she said.

Heavenly's cupcakes have been very successful, she said.

The store offers the basic varieties of chocolate covered cherry, vanilla bean, red velvet, lemon, coconut, peanut butter, and orange truffle, all made from all-natural ingredients. Even the butter-cream frosting is handmade and all made fresh daily, she said.

Sweet Jeni

Down the road a bit at The Villages in Seacrest, Faisal and Jenifer Syed opened Sweet Jeni's on the 4th of July 2010.

It's a bakery, a sweet shoppe, ice cream parlor, and coffee shop in one.

"We sell ice cream, sorbet, Italian gelato, espresso, lattes, donuts, and the popular cupcakes," said Faisal.

While others' cupcakes may tend toward the basic, Jeni's are on the creative side.

Since opening, she has offered 25 different kinds, but during the summer rush she is concentrating on offering the proven best sellers.

She is currently offering three different chocolate varieties: the chocolate bomb with chocolate fudge filling with chocolate chips in the chocolate icing; the Reese's chocolate cake with chocolate icing and Reese's chips on top; and cookies and cream with Oreo crumbles on top.

But if chocolate is not your thing, other options await, such as a delectable coconut cake with caramel filling, rolled in coconut and topped with a pecan. Or, a white cake with lemon curd filling and cream cheese icing rolled in lemon sugar. Or, a white cake with strawberry cream cheese icing rolled in strawberry sugar. Or, a white on white cake with cream cheese icing and sprinkles on top.

This involves two incredibly, easy to find, ingredients. Chocolate and fresh strawberries. But it somehow makes for an extra special treat, when accompanied with your main squeeze.
