Cincinnati's Hidden Sports History: Downtown / Mount Adams
Arnold's Bar & Grill , 210 E. Eighth St. The oldest bar in town was open when Harry Wright came to town in 1867 to captain a cricket team before the city got its famous baseball team, the Red Stockings. It's the oldest bar in town and still home to the late "Peanut Jim" Shelton's cart that roasted peanuts outside Crosley Field, the Reds' home from 1912-70.
Birth of the Black Sox Scandal , Metropole Hotel, 609 Walnut St. (across street from Aronoff Center for the Arts). Just outside the hotel, Reds center fielder and future Hall of Famer Edd Roush learned during the 1919 World Series that the fix was in by the Chicago Black Sox. The hotel later became an apartment complex and now is being refurbished as an upscale hotel.

Bengals birthplace , Sheraton Gibson Hotel, west side of Walnut Street between Fourth and Fifth. The Gibson, built in 1849 and razed in 1977, is where the original Bengals partners convened with founder Paul Brown to get the pro football franchise off the ground.
: National League office , Carew Tower, 441 Vine St., Suite 2601. This is where former Reds general manager Warren Giles ran the show when he was president of the National League from 1951-69.
Cincinnati Athletic Club , 111 Shillito Rikes Place. The club, founded in 1853, has a membership that includes U.S. presidents Rutherford B. Hayes, James Garfield, Benjamin Harrison and William Howard Taft. President George H.W. Bush once took several laps around the 1/20th-mile track above the gym, did some medicine-ball crunches and took a steam bath. Ezzard Charles also fought here before becoming heavyweight champion.
Queen City Gym , 810 Plum St. (across from City Hall). This is where junior welterweight champion Aaron Pryor trained. Pizza magnate Buddy LaRosa, Pryor's manager, paid his sparring partners $200 a week to go four-minute rounds with the champ, with 30 seconds in between, and he went through them like tomato sauce. It was a tough buck because Pryor beat the heck out of them all and nobody lasted on the job. A "For Sale" sign now hangs in a window.
Walter Laufer's training pool , Central YMCA, 1105 Elm St. This is where the Cincinnati native trained when he beat 1924 Olympics swimming star Johnny Weissmuller in 1926, before Weissmuller went on to become Tarzan and Laufer went on to win two gold medals in the 1928 Olympics. This also is the gym where Oscar Robertson played his post-NBA pickup basketball, burying shot after shot from long range.
