City Officials Want C-USA Basketball Tournament To Return To El Paso
EL PASO, Texas -- El Paso City Council voted unanimously to back UTEP and the El Paso Convention and Visitors Bureau in their hunt to get the Conference USA basketball tournament back in El Paso. "We're bidding either 2013 or 2014," said Bill Blaziek the general manger of the El Paso Convention and Visitors Bureau. "Based on the memory they have of the success here in El Paso, I think we have a lot of momentum going into the bid." There will be some changes from the 2011 tournament held in El Paso at the University of Texas at El Paso campus. "Last time the financial risk was much higher," said UTEP Athletic Director Bob Stull. "We had to guarantee a sight fee of $1 million," said Blaziek. This time that guarantee is half of that at $500,000. Another change would be having all the games at the Don Haskins Center, which means the tournament would be extended to an entire week. "The women's championship drew 1,000, and Conference USA would be quick to tell you thats the largest crowd as they've ever had for a women's championship," said Blaziek. He believes more people would fill the Don with the changes. It would also save UTEP the cost of putting in new floor and scoreboards at Memorial Gym. One thing that wouldnt change according to Blaziek is the money that pours into El Paso from the tournament. "An economic impact in the neighborhood of $3.5 million," he said. Blaziek is hopeful that number will increase along with the more than 3, 000 people that made their way to El Paso for the 2011 tournament. One thing he doesn't want to see different is the success of the UTEP Miners in the tournament. He said UTEP making it to the championship game means even more money for the city that supports them. "We like to bid championships when we've got a strong team," she said. "Coach (Tim) Floyd's done a tremendous job recruiting, and I think in two years we'll be pretty strong," said Stull. El Paso County commissioners may be voting on the resolution to support the bid during their regular meeting next week, but Blaziek and Stull expect to get just as much support from them.El Paso Convention Center - News

Bowling city: CVB launches piñata campaign to woo ... - El Paso Times
Lori Gomez of the Convention and Visitors Bureau photographed Ismael Vela, left, and Humberto Quinones with a 7-foot bowling pin piñata at the Wyler Aerial Tramway last week as part of a campaign to get the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships tournament here in 2015. Bureau staff are taking photos of the piñata in various location to post on Facebook as part of the effort to show El Paso's tournament support.
The El Paso Convention and Visitors Bureau has begun a campaign to get another national bowling tournament here -- an even bigger one than was held here last year, bringing thousands of visitors and millions of dollars into the city.
The campaign, "El Paso Strikes Again USBC 2015," began at the El Paso Street Festival during the Fourth of July weekend with signs and a 7-foot bowling pin pinata.
It will continue until early September, when the United States Bowling Congress is expected to pick a city to host the 2015 USBC Open Championships.
A Facebook page, where photos of the bowling pin piñata are posted as CVB staffers take it around the city to get public support for the tournament, is part of the campaign.
The United States Bowling Congress estimates that the national championships for men and women amateur bowlers draws about 100,000 people, including more than 60,000 bowlers, and has an economic impact of about $75 million, said Brooke Underwood, director of convention development for the CVB.
That would be even better for El Paso hotels, restaurants, stores, car rental agencies, and other businesses than was the 2010 USBC Women's Championships.
That three-month tournament last year brought in about 40,000 bowlers and visitors and had an estimated economic impact of about $42 million, Underwood said.
The 2015 tournament would again require the El Paso convention center to be closed to other events from January through June 2015. It takes about three months to convert the convention center into a huge bowling alley.
The tournament brings in more people than most conventions the CVB could draw here, and regional convention planners aren't even booking 2015 conventions yet, Underwood said.
Joe Frandina, president of the El Paso Hotel-Motel Association, said hotel operators would like to see another large bowling tournament here.
Hotel occupancy rates averaged 70 percent and above for April through June 2010, when the women's bowling tournament was held at the convention center.
@ EPComicCon will take place at the El Paso Convention Center 10 am. - 7 pm. Sept. 10 & 11 $15 - one day ticket $25 both days
