First in Print: Bair's Relay for Life quilt graces the CHC Cancer Center

Inside the entrance of the Community Health Center of Branch County’s (CHC) Cancer Center is a unique quilt made out of t-shirts. The story of the quilt covers how cancer survivor Kathy Bair made the quilt and also how it ended up at the CHC Cancer Center.
The story behind the quilt
The Cancer Center quilt is the sort of gift that keeps on giving. Bair made the quilt out of old Relay for Life t-shirts and donated it to the Relay for Life Auction. CHC CEO Randy DeGroot bought the quilt from the Relay for Life auction and donated it to the CHC Relay for Life silent auction. At the CHC Relay for Life auction, Richard Trufant, then CHC Chief Financial Officer, bought it and donated it to the CHC Cancer Center.
In her words
When asked why she chose to do the quilt, Bair said, “I saw an ad in Runner’s World magazine for a quilt that was made out of running t-shirts. My sister-in-law found instructions for making a quilt out of the t-shirts and we made a running quilt for my husband out of his race t-shirts. When the Relay for Life had an auction, I decided to make a quilt using Relay for Life t-shirts. It was sold for a lot of money the first year, so I made another one last year, which is the quilt that is hanging in the CHC Cancer Center. Now people have given me bags of t-shirts to make another one.”
Close to home
Bair takes great pride in her work and it takes her a number of weeks to complete the quilt after work and on the weekends. For Bair, the quilt projects hit close to home.
“There have been many cases of cancer in my family,” Bair said. “My mother died from cancer seven years ago. My father and I are both cancer survivors. I like to make the quilts to raise money for the American Cancer Society and to be a reminder to those with cancer that there are people fighting to find a cure.
