Harry Potter finale conjures up internet scams

Web users looking to sneak a peek at the latest Harry Potter film may find themselves with a rather nasty surprise.

Security firm PC Tools is reporting a malware attack which targets people in search of "less than legal" copies of the film.

The attack is launched if the user clicks on the attacker's torrent link. The infected download decompresses with a text file which says that the movie is "password protected" and directs to another site.

This site then asks the victim to download another file in order to unlock the supposed Harry Potter finale. The file, of course, is the malware payload.

The trick is a bit of a spin on the old 'fake codec' trick in which the attacker tells the victim that an additional file is needed to watch a movie. With torrents now the preferred method for trading in pirated media, it's no surprise that these sort of attacks have popped up.

It's also no surprise that the attackers are using a big-time media event. Everything from national disasters to celebrity deaths are used to infect computers with the promise of videos and exclusive sites.

It's always a good idea to keep your wits about you and be on the lookout for any suspicious activity when surfing for videos and news information. If an offer is too good to be true, it usually is.

now there is an app for that

Unfortunately, the malware attacks and scams will come up anytime a new movie, book, or TV show will be just about to be released. It is interesting that Apple just released an iPhone app a few days ago, called Scam Detector, which exposes a few hundred scams and explains how they work. It is worth checking it out, if you have an iPhone. Kinda cool, actually.

In auto-track mode the surface grows automatically within a user specified tracking area. The tracker can be controlled by amplitude only, by a step-wise amplitude difference and by similarity (cross-correlation). Several commercial plugins offer additional visualization capabilities & viewers (e.g. the HorizonCube allows sliding through a dense set of horizons, The Well Correlation Panel (v4.2) supports a dedicated 2D viewer, as does Spectral Bluing and Colored Inversion (v4.2)). Visualization elements can be moved freely through data space to interactively analyse data from stored volumes, or data calculated on-the-fly. Visualization elements include slices (inlines, crosslines, timeslices), horizons, random lines and cubes. For better interpretation of the data and analysis results, OpendTect supports volume rendering and stereo viewing.
