Some students coming to the Muscogee County School District because of the Base Realignment and Closure at Fort Benning might find a slot in one of the district’s magnet programs but it may depend on what some students already accepted choose to do.
School Superintendent Susan Andrews said it is still too early to tell how BRAC will affect the district because many students may not arrive until September. School begins Aug. 8, and she said more should be known after verification day this week.
Andrews knows some BRAC students will be interested in attending one of the district’s magnet programs.
“I told principals to hold back about 10 slots in the magnets for late registering BRAC students,” Andrews said. “Principals told me that there are usually about that many of our currently enrolled students who register for the magnets that do not show for one reason or another. We discussed that if that was the norm in a school that those slots that would open could be used for the BRAC students without actually setting aside the 10 slots.”
Andrews said Friday that Marvin Crumbs, the new principal at liberal arts magnet Columbus High, told her he currently has 17 spots available across all grade levels.
She said the statement by Crumbs confirmed what recently retired Columbus High Principal Judy Whitt told her when Andrews had first mentioned holding open slots: Students who get accepted don’t always come.
A few qualify and then move from town.
“Most magnets usually do not start the year at maximum capacity so this is not an issue in most places, except at Columbus High and Britt David,” Andrews said.
She added that Susan Willard, the principal at Early College Academy, told her she had held a few slots and already filled them with BRAC-related students.
“We will not have many available slots at magnets but if we have requests for magnet programs and if the child qualifies, we will try to get them in. We may not be able to accommodate everyone’s first choice, however,” Andrews said. “I have not heard from any principal or from our registration department that this is an issue at this time. We will be working with individual parents and individual schools on issues such as this.”
Mike Hudson, the district’s director of student services, said he’d heard that about 6,800 school-aged children are coming to the area and that Columbus schools could get about 4,000. He has not heard anyone update those numbers. Andrews said some students might be coming later than expected, giving as one reason a family’s need to sell a house.
