Rockin' Robin
Vegetable gardening is flourishing and even the old-fashioned ferns are having a revival. Only one type of gardening is out of fashion: rock gardening. I began with rock plants at the early age of 10. I may well end with them while building a rock garden in my eighties. By then even fewer alpine plant nurseries may be surviving in Britain. Rock gardening needs more friends, willing to take up the tradition which has been a mainstay of my life.
On summer posters in the London Underground Kew Gardens is inviting us to “visit the Alps”, meaning the vast rocks of its big rock garden. August is an odd time to advertise an alpine garden. It is the off season, falling between the May peak and the best of the autumn gentians. Meanwhile at Wisley the two-acre rock garden of the Royal Horticultural Society is celebrating its 100th birthday. I will wait to revisit Kew and will reflect meanwhile on the history of this style of gardening, helped by a centenary essay, written for the RHS.
Brent Elliott at the RHS Lindley Library is just the person to guide us round the tortuous paths of the subject. He is Britain’s most erudite historian of gardening and has an unrivalled knowledge of the 19th century, the age when rock gardening became truly fashionable. In an Occasional Paper for the RHS Lindley Library he has composed a fascinating history of the sequel, “The British Rock Garden in The Twentieth Century”. Do not underestimate the title. Unmissable controversies and impassioned initiatives run through it, portraying a social history that historians of the period will continue to neglect at their peril. Human nature is as ineradicable as mare’s-tail weed among the rocks. The physical effort and dedication in this story are awesome, a tribute to muscle, will and vision.
For a start there are the amazing arguments over what a rock garden is supposed to display. Is it the rocks and if so, of what sort? Or is it the plants and if so, what is an “alpine” and what is not? Elliott isolates four stages in the use of rockwork. At Bicton in Devon a rock garden is dated to the early 19th century and deliberately used only one type of rock. The rocks, however, were bizarrely set with their upper tips laid vertically downwards. “Naturalism” then preferred the rocks to resemble natural outcrops. At Chatsworth the great Joseph Paxton laid rocks in imitation of a natural outcrop at Bolton Abbey. I assume he chose this model because his employers, the Dukes of Devonshire, owned both Bolton and Chatsworth. “Natural” outcrops were not to be set in “unnatural” lawns or gardened settings.
