SkyGrid (for iPad)
The iPad has no shortage of solid news reading apps, with Flipboard (Free, 4.5 stars) and Zite (Free, 4.5 stars) leading the pack, so in order to make a splash in the market you have to bring something fresh to the table. The free SkyGrid newsreading app's claim to fame is that it let users follow particular categories and hot topics. That's pretty cool, and the interface is slick and eye-catching, but the app isn't as customizable as I'd like, and the navigation experience isn't as streamlined as its competitors'.
Layout and Navigation
Launching this iPad app opens a non-customizable, 3 x 3 grid featuring large thumbnail images that link to hot stories. The layout looks great, but at times boxes didn't load images. When I opened the app there were articles covering everything from Apple rumors to the nationwide heat wave. Tapping "Iran Downs US Aircraft" opened a vertically-aligned sidebar that featured the news sources for that hot topic: CNN, Wired, UPI, and more. Each outlet had an accompanying thumbnail image and a timestamp for when each story went live online, so you can always check out the latest story, which I liked. Tapping a story opened a page featuring a very short excerpt. In fact, many of the excerpts were too short, lacking the information needed to entice me to click through to a story.
Tapping the "View Full Article" icon in the lower-right portion of the screen took me to the story's actual webpage, so that I could read the full article there. Bringing a finger to the "Featured" icon in the upper-left portion of the screen re-opens the sidebar so you can visit other related stories. There's a lot of tapping going on here, far more so than with Flipboard, an app that replicates the page-turning magazine and newspaper layout with swipe-based navigation. When I want to kick back and read a few stories on the iPad, I want the experience to be as passive as possible.
The sidebar also acts as a navigation menu designed to let you dive deeper into the Skygrid experience. "Categories" displays of list 29 topics ranging from Science & Tech to Boxing, with a corresponding icon that makes the topic easily identifiable when one of its stories makes the main page. When I selected "Gaming (Tech)," a variety of gaming stories appeared from the likes of 148Apps, 1UP, 411Mania, and other video game outlets.
