The Tinley Park Park District is inviting the community to see the working plans for a new handicap accessible playground planned for McCarthy Park.
Park District Director John Curran said the public is invited to the Bettenhausen Recreation Center at 7 p.m. Tuesday to see the plans and offer feedback and suggestions.
“We want to get their input as to certain items,” Curran said. “We want to know what their children may like more.”
While the park will be available to all children, it will be the first 100 percent accessible playground in the park district, Curran said.
It will include ramps, a rubberized surface to allow easy wheelchair movement, and other features designed to help develop motor skills, he said.
The park is located at 16801 S. 80th Ave., and also includes the newly finished Tinley Park Performing Arts Center and courtyard with paths leading to the playground.
Work on the new playground is tentatively scheduled to begin in the fall, Curran said, and will come with a price tag of about $250,000. A standard playground update normally runs the park district about $90,000, but the rubberized surface alone will cost about $75,000, Curran said.
