Penny Rogers, a senior teacher at the Alpha State School, explained the teachers came back and spent about four weeks cleaning the school while builders laid new carpets.

"At one stage it was looking like we might have bare concrete floors to go back into.

"So our school, though it was a little bit shabby, we did have teaching environments that were ready for the kids.

"All the staff and community pulled together and we had quite a pleasant working environment to start off the term with," she said.

After school started back they also had to get individual rooms renovated, re-painted and re-furnished.

Ms Rogers said the students were good at moving rooms and fitting in around the builders as things were gradually repaired.

"They were probably as excited as we were to see their rooms put back into order and repaired.

"I suppose it was a bit like a Christmas morning.

"New furniture kept arriving every other week and gradually we've got all our resources back."

By the end of term two, Ms Rogers said the school was pretty much back to normal.

The only area they are still working on is sorting and covering the new books for the library.

"It's really just getting our library back up and running with the books that we lost in the flood," she explained.

The school has implemented some strategies to help cope with any future flood events, but Ms Rogers explains it's not possible to flood proof the whole school.

"The new building that arrived at the beginning of the year was raised above flood level.

"Just from the secondary point of view, we had our staff room downstairs, we've now moved upstairs so we don't have to move books and that sort of thing.

"But it's very hard when you have low buildings, there's not a lot you can do except at the end-of-year, making sure things are up quite a bit higher," said Ms Rogers.

Despite the difficult start to the year with the flood damage and loss of resources; the school is now looking great and has had some positives come out of the devastating flood.

Ms Rogers said they were fortunate that resources damaged in the flood were replaced; like for like.
