Illinois grocery warehouse fined for 'serious' safety violations ...
The federal Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has written a safety violation citation for the warehouse and distribution center of Jewel Food Store Inc. The Illinois-based grocery chain faces a fine of $75,000 for the violations.
The agency says it found 13 safety violations at the warehouse about 160 miles northeast of Peoria in Franklin Park, a Chicago suburb. Ten of the violations were deemed "serious."
According to the agency, a "serious violation" is one where there's a "substantial probability" that a serious workplace injury or even death could result.
Jewel is headquartered in Itasca, another Chicago suburb. It has more than 100 stores across Illinois, Iowa and Indiana, though none here in Peoria.
After an inspection, OSHA claimed the grocery store chain's warehouse lacked "several required elements" for the safe handling of ammonia refrigeration systems. Ammonia refrigeration systems are often used in those kinds of warehouses, meat processing plants and other commercial settings.
The refrigerators can pose ammonia leak and explosion risks to workers.
"Developing and following written procedures for the handling of substances like ammonia is critical to employees' safety," OSHA's Chicago area director said in a statement. "Employers are responsible for knowing what hazards exist in their workplaces and following OSHA's regulations."
The agency states that the warehouse didn't properly address dangers related to ammonia handling and ammonia refrigeration operation procedures. Also among the violations deemed serious was a failure to follow maintenance procedures and a failure to document tests and inspections on processing equipment.
Clearly, when workers are ordered to handle potentially lethal substances such as ammonia, employers must make them aware of both the dangers and proper safety procedures in order to avoid workplace injuries and job-related illnesses.
