Rann knifed as US teeters on the brink
Julia Gillard is in Canberra. She's been on ABC radio's AM program this morning. She has no public events scheduled for the day. She'll attend a cabinet meeting this afternoon.
Tony Abbott is on a family holiday at an undisclosed location. Julie Bishop is Acting Opposition Leader.
Rann to go: Labor's factions have decreed South Australian Premier Mike Rann must go. He's agreed but is hanging on to tie up a few loose ends and make his exit as dignified as possible. The shoppies' union has played a major role in the coup - the same union that helped bring down Kevin Rudd . It's a reminder, if one were needed, of the capacity of modern Labor to act without sentimentality in an effort to hold onto government. Julia Gillard knows first hand the brutal pragmatism involved in such a move. Nonetheless, Rann's ousting will give her pause for thought.
US crisis: It's a critical week for the world economy with the US having to raise its debt ceiling by midnight Tuesday or default on its obligations. There are signs the parties are moving closer to a deal to avert financial calamity. Julia Gillard told AM this morning that Australians were watching events in Washington with "a great deal of interest and concern". But she said there was cause for confidence domestically. "Whilst of course our economy is not immune to world events, including events in the US economy, the underlying fundamentals of our economy are strong."
Time off: Tony Abbott - the Ever-Ready Bunny of Australian politics - has finally stopped for a break, giving us all some rest from his relentless anti-carbon tax campaign. The PM ended her shoe leather tour a week earlier. The Opposition Leader's office says it'll be a "short break".
Dicky valve: Kevin Rudd is scheduled to have surgery today to replace a worn-out heart valve.
Diary: There's a Senate inquiry hearing into finance for the not-for-profit sector today. Another committee is examining the status, health and sustainability of Australia's koala population.
