DuBose: Becoming friends with the sewing machine – again

My daughter wanted to learn to sew. On the sewing machine.

"I do not really remember how to do it," I shrugged, when asked Holly, a couple of weeks, "but it will come back to me."

"You do not remember, but you will teach me?" She asked, unconvinced.

"Yeah!" I replied confidently. But the truth is, I was worried. What if I could not remember how to use the machine? What if the thread got hopelessly tied? What if I could not talk my way of gnarled nightmare and my daughter left the room, shaking his head in disgust?

Before I could blow up even if I had to find the darned thing.

"Where is he?" She asked. I had no idea. We moved three times since I'd last used, and I lost track of his whereabouts.

"It is either in the back of your closet or the basement," I answered, without obligation. I did not know and I was not even sure it would still work if I found it.

The last time I had touched was when I had it cleaned and repaired nine years ago, in anticipation of a fashion frenzy that never materialized. But nine years is a long time.

The second time, she asked, I searched her closet. He was not there. Something distracts me and I never made it down to the basement to look there.

By the time I had to do laundry, I forgot it all.

I took a sewing class when my husband and I were married, after buying the machine a snowy night after work, he carried home on the train, and put it under our Christmas tree. My first project was a quilt I made for my sister and her new husband. It was an absurd thing to try from the start, but sometimes ignorance is bliss.My instructor just smiled at my simplicity, as she passed me a reason. But this patchwork, and the next, was very good.

Couture has taken a back seat to sleep, however, when my oldest son came on the scene. I was too tired. I was also too busy, and sticky baby hands and the hands seemed to me an ugly combination. I had good intentions, however, and even bought a bolt of fabric, when I was pregnant with Holly, a beautiful pale green cloth with purple tulips I had planned to make a quilt for her.

But the fabric is still on the bolt.

Wisely, she gave up ever finding my sewing machine and spoke to his father in hauling it from the basement.
